Malibu Backyard Movie Screen Rental - Birthday Party
This is one backyard movie party where I'll admit that the Pyramid Pyro screen was not the best sight of the day. The host's house was way up in the mountains overlooking Malibu and the ocean. I arrived just early enough before dark and guests arrived to soak in the view for about two seconds before it was time to get to work. The house itself was huge and the viewing area was a small yard between the house and driveway which were on entirely different levels. The backyard movie screen was positioned against and anchored to the front porch which doubled as a patio. The outdoor movie projector was positioned at the far end of the yard adjacent to a few palm trees which also served as protection for the projector.
The host laid out a large plastic sheet on the grassy ground between the screen and projector where the kids could watch. The plastic was mostly for moisture protection because it was very damp due to the proximity to the beach and time of year. Everyone brought and watched from the warmth of sleeping bags (it was also a slumber party to celebrate the boy's birthday). Another unique viewing point to see the backyard movie screen was a trampoline that sat on the side of the yard - no bouncing though because of noisy springs.
A new speaker system was purchased for maximum quality and volume. Unfortunately, it was on backorder so a "loaner" system of equal quality was used. This system consisted of two Mackie SRM-450 V2 powered speakers. I must admit, these are great powered speakers. At one point during the backyard movie party some explosions were shaking bins in the back of the viewing area. Everything sounded great and they functioned very well.
The kids had a great time and the adults who stuck around to watch seemed to really enjoy the movie and backyard movie party theme. The slumber party combo made late night viewing much easier and I can't say enough about the big powered speakers. Thanks to the host and birthday boy of this great event.
Actually, here's two tips...
Tip One: First, trust your host's driving directions. Because this house was so far up in the mountains you can't really trust your street-driving instincts; what looks like a wrong turn really might not be. I had the address, the host's directions, and a GPS pre-programmed to be prepared. Had I just stuck the host's directions I would have been fine. The host drives to and from their home every day. The lady in the GPS does not. If your backyard movie screen rental is in a unique or secluded area, go with the host's directions first.
Tip Two: Check the weather report for humidity in addition to rain and wind (among other things). Humidity and condensation may not ruin an event, but it can cause some anxiety when your screen material and equipment are gathering dew. Be prepared by bringing some dry towels or rags to wipe down your equipment as much as possible before packing up. Your outdoor movie projector will thank you.
